The 29th International Waendel Walk Weekend.
On Saturday 10th May 2008, 18 members of FREED(UK) took part in the Waendel Walk. This event runs annually and this year was the 29th International Waendel Weekend – 9th, 10th & 11th May.
There are a variety of walks from 5k to 42k throughout the
Northamptonshire countryside all starting and finishing in
Wellingborough. 2008 was special as the weather was beautiful (a bit
too hot for the serious walkers!) last year we walked in cold windy
conditions with heavy showers.
Our Team (pictured right minus Anne who was taking the picture) walked 10k and are trying to raise £3,000 to complete the building of our kitchen at Nandom Hospital and a further £1,800 to pay taxes and transport costs for the container sent to Nandom earlier this year. At the time of writing the total amount raised was still unknown but you can be sure that we will let you know as soon as we know.
The Team chatted and joked along the way, enjoying the sunshine, catching up with each other’s news and looking forward to a well-earned pub lunch! We were joined by 100’s of other walkers, many with children and dogs all taking part for their own personal reasons – maybe just enjoying the exercise and the great outdoors. Serious walkers come from all over Europe and as far away as Australia and America, they spend the weekend in Wellingborough and the event is based at the Castle Theatre where entertainment is available all day and well into the evening.
We hope to walk annually to raise funds for our various projects. It is usually held on the same weekend in May and we will welcome anyone who wishes to join us in 2009. Details are available through the Borough Council of Wellingborough Tel: 01933 229777.
If you would like to make a donation please make cheques payable to FREED (UK) and send to:
